DIRECTV Gemini Device

Called by some the most significant DIRECTV's set top box upgrade in nearly a decade, the new Gemini device was officially launched earlier in April 2023. The receiver was made available for both DIRECTV satellite and Internet customers. Prior that, existing qualified customers were offered a free upgrade for the testing purpose.

DIRECTV Gemini Logo

But even after this set top box was added to a regular DIRECTV offer, we still can't find much of the technical data about it. There is no official source that would list the technical specifications like dimensions, processor, memory, DVR space, and so on. To add to a possible confusion, this box is identical to the DIRECTV STREAM device that was previously offered by DIRECTV as a part of their streaming TV service. As we already know, DIRECTV STREAM now comes as a service via your own device. No streaming device is being offered anymore.

Remember: Even though these devices look the same, they have different firmware, and therefore are not interchangeable. The Gemini offered to DIRECTV satellite customers is not the same as the streaming device previously offered to DIRECTV STREAM customers.

Let's now see what we know about the new Gemini for satellite based DIRECTV service.

What is DIRECTV Gemini and How It Works?

This small but powerful box comes 4K UHD ready for your HD TV. If connected to 4K TV, it will detect it. As Gemini is Android based, it will connect to Google Play Store. This will allow you to browse and add popular streaming apps. In order to access Google Play Store, Google Assistant, and Google Photos, you need an active Google Account. This requires high speed internet connection.

Please note that since this new receiver has been released, the DIRECTV service can be used in two ways:

  • DIRECTV Via Satellite – A traditional way of using DIRECTV via satellite dish. For this, you still need the Genie receiver with which your Gemini will work in pair. In such scenario, Genie is still your main receiver, while the Gemini box is a sort of child device.
  • DIRECTV Via Internet – A new way of using DIRECTV, yet not as DIRECTV STREAM. In this case, your Gemini is all you need, plus a sufficient Internet connection. DIRECTV recommends 8Mbps per stream for the best experience and enhanced features. For 4K UHD it would be a minimum of 25 Mbps.
DIRECTV Gemini Device with TV

Keep in mind that the above ways of using the Gemini box refer to how it receives the TV programming signal. Speaking of the physical connection, we will cover that later below, in the "How to connect?" section.

Another thing to remember is that Gemini boxes sent for both via Satellite and via Internet customers are the same hardware, but they work differently. In other words, with the either box, you cannot later switch between satellite and Internet options. Once you pick your DIRECTV package via Satellite or via Internet, that is it – you can't switch unless you cancel and order a new service. Not sure if DIRECTV would allow you to switch between the two if you ask them. We could not find any reference to a such case.

Anyhow, if you are here as a potential new customer of DIRECTV, here are your starting choices, when about hardware to begin with:

  • Choice 1: DIRECTV Via Satellite
    • Genie 2 HD DVR included, that is, no extra fee
    • First Gemini device is included
  • Choice 2: DIRECTV Via Internet
    • First Gemini device is included
    • Unlimited Cloud DVR is included

Note: Even as the starting hardware comes free with the new orders of DIRECTV service, there is a fee called Advanced Receiver Service (ARS), priced at $15/month. The fee cannot be skipped over. It is a fee for HD, DVR, Whole Home Services, ongoing feature and software upgrades, and dedicated customer service support.

DIRECTV Gemini Receiver – How To Connect?

We already listed the two ways of how to get the DIRECTV service – via Satellite and via Internet. From that perspective, in relation to Gemini receivers, it is important not to forget the following:

  • For customers connecting to DIRECTV service via satellite, Gemini cannot receive DIRECTV programming or respond to DVR commands without being connected to the Genie.
  • For customers connecting to DIRECTV service via Internet, no other device is required.

The two points above answer the question, "Can I use a Gemini device by itself?" In the first case, no, in the second case, yes. One may ask, "How come?" Well, this is possible because the Gemini device comes with two firmwares, one for the via Satellite, and the other one for via Internet. We believe we cleared this now, and will not bug you with repeating it anymore.

Now, let's explore all the different scenarios, and see how we can connect our new Gemini device to the rest of the DIRECTV infrastructure.

Via Satellite, Scenario 1 – Gemini Setup Through The Wireless Connection

In this scenario, we connect to DIRECTV service via Satellite. The Gemini device will be connect through the home Wi-Fi, that is, the local wireless network. The procedure is the same with either if you are replacing one of your Genie Minis, or just installing your new Gemini device.

Here are the steps for setting up your Gemini device over Wi-Fi:

  1. Out of the box, you have the Gemini device, power supply, HDMI cable, and remote.
  2. If this is a replacement device, disconnect your current device, HDMI cord and power supply and set aside – including the remote.
  3. Plug the HDMI cable into your device and the other end into your TV.
  4. Plug the power supply into the new device. Plug the other end into an outlet.
  5. Power on your TV. You may need to switch your TV source input to match the HDMI port you plugged the Gemini device into.
  6. Remove the battery slip from the back of the remote control.
  7. Follow the on-screen prompts. This includes the following:
    1. Pair your remote and device. Point the remote at the device and press the FAST FORWARD and REWIND buttons for 2-3 seconds at the same time. When paired, a confirmation screen displays.
    2. Select your Wireless network and enter the password. Once connected, your device checks for updates and may automatically restart. (This may take a few moments)
    3. Review and accept Terms & Conditions.
    4. Select or enter the room location for this device.
    5. Enter your Google ID and password, if you have one.
(Remember that the Gemini Voice remote with Google Assistant is compatible with the Gemini device. It will not work on other Genie receivers – and the Genie remote will not work with the Gemini device.)

Via Satellite, Scenario 2 – Gemini Setup Through The Wired Connection

Now we come to the wired scenario. This means, you use the Ethernet connection to get your Gemini connected to your home network. Before we list the steps, here is the picture of the device's rear panel:

  1. Out of the box, you should have your Gemini device, power supply, HDMI cable, and remote. Be sure to use the new cables provided with your new device to experience optimal viewing.
  2. Unhook the HDMI cord, coaxial cable and power cord from your current device and put the device, HDMI cord and power supply aside. Set aside the old remote, too. Do not disconnect the end of the coaxial cable connected to the wall.
  3. Connect the coax cable you just disconnected from your old device to the Ethernet coax adaptor. Hand tighten to ensure a snug fit.
  4. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to your new device. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet coax adaptor.
  5. Connect the small end of the micro USB cable to the Ethernet coax adaptor. The plastic tab on the adaptor may need to be moved to access the micro USB port.
  6. Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into your TV.
  7. Plug the other end into an outlet.
  8. Power on your TV. You may need to switch your TV source input to match the HDMI port you plugged the Gemini device into.
  9. Remove the battery tag from the back of the remote.

For help with wireless connection, see the instruction above in this page.
  4. Plug the HDMI cable into your Gemini device. Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into your TV. Use the same HDMI input that your old HDMI cable was plugged into. 4. Plug the power supply into the Gemini. Plug the other end into an outlet.
  5. Make sure your TV is powered on and all cable connections are secured. You may need to switch the source input using your TV remote to match the HDMI input connecting the Gemini device to the TV.
  6. Gently remove the slip from the back of the remote.
  7. The rest of the set-up will be following the TV screen prompts which may include:
    • Remote pairing
    • Connecting to your home internet network
    • Software updates
    • Receiver activation
    • Accepting terms and conditions
    • Google options

DIRECTV Gemini Receiver – Differences Between via Satellite vs via Internet

This device is quite new at this time of May 2023, as it was "officially" mentioned at the beginning of April, same year. Therefore, this may be confusing for some because of the co-existence of DIRECTV and DIRECTV STREAM. We say this because DIRECTV STREAM is already utilizing Internet via various devices, and now we have this DIRECTV Gemini in two ways – via Satellite and via Internet. As mentioned above, forget DIRECTV STREAM when we talk about this Gemini receiver for satellite based DIRECTV. They may look the same, but they are different from the "inside" perspective – they come with different firmwares, so they work differently.

So, here we compare the Gemini receiver for the satellite DIRECTV service – via Satellite vs via Internet:
