Although it has been around for years, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) still puzzles many of us with such questions as: What is VoIP? and How does VoIP work?

While most of us use the Internet on a frequent basis, we often don't know how it works, or exactly what makes the Internet the largest computer network in the world. The Internet is simply the connection of over 4.9 billion people using the Internet. In the U.S. there are an estimated 307 million Internet users and over 75 million VoIP users. North America holds around 40% of the global market for VoIP. The Internet is the technology that powers VoIP services. What is VoIP? Well, as stated, it's Voice over Internet Protocol, but all that really means is that VoIP uses the Internet to exchange voice communications and phone calls instead of traditional landline telephones and cables.

All of these numbers point to the notion that Internet usage and VoIP services usage will increase. From $85.2 billion in 2021, the global market for VoIP services is expected to grow to $102.5 billion by 2026 (Research and Markets, 2021).

How Does VoIP Work?

VoIP uses the technology that converts voice into a digital signal. This allows you to use devices like VoIP phones, computers, and smartphones to make calls like from an ordinary phone. The difference between an ordinary phone and VoIP is that for VoIP, the service is delivered over the Internet. Some refer to VoIP as to broadband phone service, broadband telephony, Internet telephony, or IP telephony. No matter the name, it's always about the Internet based phone service.

Now, because VoIP uses the Internet, this allows for more data to be carried over the network. This further allows for more features to be developed which makes VoIP stand out over the traditional phone service. Such features are beneficial to both business and home users. The features can be enhanced phone calls, faxes, voice mail, conference calls, and more.
