Verizon Internet Equipment
Equipment for Verizon Internet Services
Verizon provides a good selection of high-end gear and accessories to take full advantage of the operator’s DSL and Fios connection. In total, there are eight different devices, ranging from basic Fios Home Router to Wi-Fi extenders.
This article takes a closer look at each individual device. For easier navigation, they have been categorized based on type. Whichever you choose, the user manual is included so you shouldn’t have any problems to install it or run basic maintenance.
Fios Routers
At the time of writing, Verizon offered three Fios routers –Home Router, Quantum Gateway, and Actiontec Wireless Broadband. This networking gear comes with different specs, so you should check out all the relevant details.
Home Router
This is a 4x4 tri-band router that packs quite a decent punch. The device supports 802.11ax Wi-Fi speeds, which are the fastest currently available. The throughput is the highest possible so you’re not likely to experience significant drops or lag even if you connect multiple devices.
Of course, this also depends on your plan. Nevertheless, the router comes with SON (Self-Organizing Networks) function. This means it optimizes Wi-Fi performance and efficiency to provide optimal users experience. In addition, SON features Band Steering and Access Point functions.
Quantum Gateway
Quantum Gateway is best suited for homes with multiple connected devices, either via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It distributes and transmits information and entertainment to all linked devices with minimal drops and no lag.
You can install the gateway on your own and the entire process is made super-easy with My Fios and My Verizon apps. If you don’t want to bother with the apps, you can download the installation guide on the official website.
Actiontec Wireless Broadband
Verizon offers four versions of Actiontec wireless broadband routers:
- MI424WR rev. I
- MI424WR rev. G
- MI424WR
- MI424WR Wireless
The differences between these routers are minimal to the untrained eye. Choosing one or the other versions may depend on your location, size of home, internet plan, and number of connected devices.
If these routers are designed to work with coaxial cable, Ethernet, and wireless protocols. As such, they’re a good choice for large households with multiple users.
High-Speed Routers
As for high-speed routers, there are two options at your disposal. However, it’s more than enough to secure seamless broadband data transfer in any home. Here’s what you can get:
D-Link 2750B Wireless Gateway
The D-Link 2750B is a great solution for those who wish to get high-speed internet via a phone line. Like the rest of the routers on offer, this one is easy to install but there are certain things you should consider.
The lights on the front of the device are for Ethernet, Power, DSL, which you can use to troubleshoot connectivity. Depending on the lights’ color and behavior you can determine if your device or devices are connected to the router. Similar rules apply to gauge if the gateway is connected to the Verizon DSL.
Actiontec GT784WNV Router
This Actiontec has all the bells and whistles you might want. It incorporates wireless networking, full routing capability, and a DSL modem in one box. However, there are certain limitations.
The router is designed to work with Verizon High-Speed Internet only. That is, the GT784WNV isn’t compatible with Fios. However, you’re not compromising features by any means, since you already have high-speed internet and an option to seamlessly connect multiple devices.
Fios Wi-Fi Extenders
If you’re lucky enough to live in a huge home or want to get a decent signal in your backyard, you should consider a Wi-Fi extender. Verizon presents you with three different options that are suitable for a variety of scenarios.
Fios Home Wi-Fi
The extender supports Wi-Fi 6 which is the fastest currently available. The device receives the signal from a G3100 router and extends it throughout the parameter. Like the Home Wi-Fi router, the extender uses tri-band technology and SON function.
It also has both wired and wireless backhaul and the former one uses MoCA 2.5 or Ethernet. The really cool thing is that you can have single network name and the extender works with 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.
Fios Network Extender WCB6200Q
The WCB6200Q is designed to work with Fios Advanced Wi-Fi router and Fios Quantum Gateway. Aside from advanced extender capabilities, this extender doesn’t require advanced technical knowledge to install it.
The device comes with the installation kit and all the required components, so you should have it up and running in a matter of minutes. Plus, it shares a lot of features with the Fios Home extender.
Fios Network Extender Gen 1 (WECB)
Like the previous example, the Gen 1 extender is compatible with Fios Advanced Wi-Fi router and Fios Quantum Gateway. It can also bridge multiple technologies including coaxial cable (MoCA), Ethernet, and Wireless.
The device is TR-069 manageable and has a couple of GigE Ethernet ports. It’s dual-band concurrent and works with 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. But the best thing is the automatic synchronization via a wireless router or gateway. This means it’s plug-and-play and you won’t need to spend any time configuring the device.
Get Your Internet Gear Going
When all is said and done, Verizon provides you with all the gear you need to have a well-connected home. Combine that with one of the operator’s high-speed internet plans and the set-up should be suitable for small home-based businesses. And yes, at the right speeds you’ll be able to watch Netflix while your children are gaming.
