About Verizon and Services It Offers
Most people know Verizon for their iconic “can you hear me now?” series of commercials from the mid-2000s. That series of ads essentially launched the company and cemented its reputation for providing outstanding coverage across the US.
But there’s a lot more to Verizon than great cell-network coverage. Their efforts to be a disruptive force in the telecom industry have paid off big in some areas and less so in others. In this article, you’ll find out a little bit about Verizon’s history and a basic overview of their services.
A Brief History
Founded in 2000 as a joint venture, Verizon was meant to establish a link between American titan Bell Atlantic and the British corporation Vodafone. Both businesses had a vested interest in bridging the Atlantic gap and gaining a stake in each other’s markets.
Eventually, Vodafone divested their stock and Verizon Communications (the newly renamed Bell Atlantic) became the sole owner. Verizon saw steady growth in the cellular services space all through the 2000s and by 2015 was covering 98% of the population in the US.
Currently operating as a 4G LTE network, Verizon has been branching out into other communications services as well. They now provide internet services both through Wi-Fi hotspots and broadband and television packages to select areas.
RootMetrics, the mobile network performance watchdog, has ranked Verizon in first place for overall performance for 2018 and 2019.
Verizon Wireless
Wireless phone services are still the core of Verizon’s business model. Verizon Wireless has one of the best networks in the US and their size allows them to offer many exclusive devices and applications. They also claim that they’ll be the first company to offer 5G network capabilities in the near future.
In 2019, Verizon made a significant shift in their billing options for wireless plans. They ditched the device subsidy model that’s so popular with other big providers. Instead, new Verizon customers would either have to buy their phones outright or pay for it in monthly installments. The move sparked some controversy but it seems to be attracting many users who appreciate the reduced rate if they already own their device.
They offer five unlimited plans, each tailored to a different user profile. They range from the Just Kids plan, which offers content filters and location tracking to the Get More Unlimited plan which has features designed for professionals.
They also offer several unadvertised plans for businesses and individuals. Information on these can be found in Verizon stores.
In addition, they have many shared data and single device plans that cater to niche user bases and generally forgo some value in favor of reduced costs. More about Verizon Wireless Plans.
Verizon Home Internet
Verizon Home Internet provides high-speed connectivity through its 100% fiber-optic network, formerly known as Verizon Fios (Fiber Optic Service). Verizon has been expanding this network since the early 1990s, offering customers a more reliable and faster alternative to traditional broadband.
With competitive pricing and frequent promotions, Verizon makes it easy for new customers to switch. Their fiber-optic plans range from entry-level speeds to multi-gigabit options, catering to various household needs. Verizon also offers perks like streaming service trials and discounts for bundling home internet with eligible mobile plans, making it an attractive choice for both individuals and families seeking seamless connectivity.
Verizon TV
Verizon’s television plans are offered as part of their Fios services. One of the main advantages they offer is a trimmed down pricing model that removes all regional, broadcast, and network fees. If you’re all too familiar with television bills that end up loaded with surcharges, you’ll love their “no surprises” billing.
For a company that doesn’t focus its core business on TV, their plans are actually quite good as TV plans go. Fios TV offers four basic plans ranging from their Test Drive plan, which allows customers to try their service for 60 days, to their Most Fios TV plan that has over 425 channels.
They also offer an affordable YouTube TV plan, but which only allows users to access content from YouTube TV’s over-the-top subscription service.
The Test Drive plan has a very useful feature that tracks a user’s watching preferences. For the 60 days, users get access to all Fios channels, then Verizon uses the viewing data to recommend a plan for each user. It’s a great way to get what you need without overpaying for channels you don’t watch.
Everything Under One Roof
Verizon’s forays into markets outside their wireless network have been largely successful. At this point, negotiating a mobile, TV, and home internet plan with Verizon is one of the best value deals you can get for all three.
Verizon isn’t quite the fastest internet provider in the US – that distinction goes to AT&T – but they’re constantly expanding their capabilities. With the introduction of 5G, Verizon is slated to become the top telecom provider in the country.
