Tello Mobile

Tello Mobile

Tello Mobile is a low-cost wireless provider focused on flexibility, straightforward pricing, and customizable phone plans. Instead of requiring customers to choose from a small number of expensive unlimited packages, Tello lets you select the amount of data and talk time that fits your actual usage.

The service includes access to nationwide 5G and 4G LTE coverage, along with features such as mobile hotspot, Wi-Fi Calling, eSIM support, international calling, and Bring Your Own Phone compatibility. Tello also operates without annual service contracts, making it easier to change plans or leave the service if your needs change.

Whether you need an inexpensive plan for occasional use, a moderate amount of monthly data, or an Unlimited option for heavier smartphone use, Tello provides several ways to build a wireless plan around your budget.

What Is Tello Mobile?

Tello is a mobile virtual network operator, commonly known as an MVNO. Rather than building and maintaining its own nationwide cellular tower network, an MVNO provides service through a larger underlying wireless network.

This business model can help providers such as Tello keep operating costs lower and offer more affordable wireless plans than many traditional carriers.

Tello emphasizes three main ideas:

  • Freedom – no annual service contracts or long-term commitments
  • Customization – choose the amount of data and calling you actually need
  • Affordability – lower-cost plans designed for different levels of mobile usage

Customers can choose one of Tello’s preconfigured plans or use the Build Your Own Plan system to create a custom combination of cellular data and voice minutes.

Tello Mobile Plans & Pricing

One of the biggest reasons to consider Tello is its flexible pricing structure. Instead of making unlimited data the default choice for everyone, Tello offers several data tiers along with the ability to customize a plan.

Current standard options include plans with:

  • 2 GB of high-speed data
  • 10 GB of high-speed data
  • 20 GB of high-speed data
  • Unlimited data

Unlimited text messaging is included with every monthly plan, while customers can choose limited or unlimited voice minutes depending on their needs.

Tello’s Unlimited plan currently includes 50 GB of high-speed data before speeds are reduced for the remainder of the billing cycle. It also includes a separate 10 GB mobile hotspot allowance.

The ability to customize a plan can be particularly useful for customers who spend much of their time connected to Wi-Fi. If you consistently use only a few gigabytes of cellular data each month, there may be little reason to pay for a much larger unlimited plan.

For a complete breakdown of current options, data allowances, billing, rollover rules, and who each plan may be best suited for, visit our Tello Mobile Plans & Pricing guide.

Tello 5G & Network Coverage

Tello provides access to 5G and 4G LTE wireless service. There is no separate fee or special premium plan required to access 5G. If you have a compatible 5G phone and 5G service is available at your location, your device can connect to it automatically.

When 5G is unavailable, compatible phones can use 4G LTE instead.

Tello’s current Broadband Facts disclosures list typical network performance of:

  • 5G: approximately 79–357 Mbps download
  • 4G LTE: approximately 13–61 Mbps download

Actual speeds vary based on location, signal quality, network congestion, device compatibility, building materials, and other factors.

As with any wireless provider, coverage should be checked before switching. Tello provides an address-based coverage tool that can help estimate service around your home, workplace, school, or other frequently visited locations.

For more information about network availability, typical speeds, phone requirements, LTE bands, and coverage considerations, see our Tello Coverage & 5G Network guide.

Bring Your Own Phone to Tello

Tello supports Bring Your Own Phone, which means you may be able to continue using your current smartphone instead of purchasing another device.

Your phone must generally be:

  • Carrier unlocked
  • Compatible with Tello’s network
  • Capable of using VoLTE
  • Compatible with the appropriate LTE or 5G network bands

Tello recommends checking the device’s IMEI number through its compatibility checker before activating service. For LTE compatibility, Tello identifies Bands 2, 4, and 12 as important minimum bands, with Bands 5, 66, and 71 providing additional compatibility.

This is especially important when bringing an older phone or a device originally manufactured for another country.

eSIM or Physical SIM

Tello supports both eSIM and physical SIM cards.

With a compatible smartphone, eSIM allows you to activate Tello digitally without waiting for a physical SIM card to arrive. This can make activation faster and can also be useful for people who want to maintain multiple cellular lines on a dual-SIM phone.

Not every eSIM-capable phone is necessarily compatible with Tello, so the provider recommends checking your specific device using its IMEI compatibility tool. The phone also needs to be carrier unlocked.

If your phone does not support eSIM but otherwise meets Tello’s network requirements, you can use a traditional physical SIM card instead.

Tello Mobile Features

Despite its relatively low-cost plan structure, Tello includes many of the features customers expect from a modern wireless provider.

Depending on your plan and compatible device, available features include:

  • 5G and 4G LTE access
  • Mobile hotspot and tethering
  • Wi-Fi Calling & Text
  • eSIM activation
  • Bring Your Own Phone
  • Unlimited text messaging
  • Visual Voicemail on compatible devices
  • 3-way calling
  • International calling to qualifying destinations
  • International roaming
  • Optional Scam Guard protection
  • Family account management

Mobile hotspot access is included without a separate hotspot feature charge. On limited-data plans, hotspot usage comes from the regular plan data allowance. Tello currently provides 10 GB of hotspot data with its Unlimited plan.

Wi-Fi Calling & Text

Wi-Fi Calling can be particularly useful when cellular reception is weak indoors. With a compatible phone and properly configured account, calls and standard text messages can travel through a Wi-Fi connection rather than relying entirely on a nearby cellular tower.

There is no separate monthly charge for Tello Wi-Fi Calling. Calls use your existing plan balance just as they would when made over the cellular network.

The feature can also be helpful when traveling internationally, provided you have access to a suitable Wi-Fi connection.

Tello requires customers to register a valid U.S. E911 emergency address before enabling Wi-Fi Calling.

Tello Mobile Hotspot

Tello allows customers to turn compatible smartphones into a mobile hotspot. This lets devices such as laptops and tablets share the phone’s cellular data connection.

For limited-data plans, hotspot use simply counts toward the same data allowance included with your monthly service. The Unlimited plan includes a dedicated 10 GB hotspot allowance.

A hotspot is useful for occasional connectivity while traveling, working away from Wi-Fi, or dealing with a temporary home internet outage.

However, mobile hotspot use can consume data quickly, especially when streaming video, downloading large files, or installing software updates.

International Calling

International calling is one of Tello’s more notable benefits. Plans that include voice minutes currently include calls to 60+ international destinations at no additional international calling charge.

Eligible international calls use the minutes included in your regular monthly plan. Popular included destinations currently include countries such as Canada, Mexico, India, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and others.

For destinations that are not included, customers may be able to use Pay As You Go credit at Tello’s applicable international rates.

This can make Tello especially appealing to customers who regularly call friends, relatives, or business contacts outside the United States.

International Roaming

Tello also offers international roaming in more than 200 countries and territories. Standard roaming generally works through a Pay As You Go balance and can cover calls, texts, and mobile data depending on the destination.

Customers can also use Wi-Fi Calling abroad when it is properly configured and a compatible Wi-Fi network is available.

As of October 2026, Tello is also running a limited-time promotion that provides eligible customers with free roaming in participating European destinations through January 31, 2027. Because this is a temporary promotion, travelers should verify the current terms before relying on it.

For detailed information about included countries, Pay As You Go service, Wi-Fi Calling overseas, and roaming setup, see our Tello International Calling & Roaming guide.

Tello Family Plans

Tello can also accommodate families and households with multiple wireless lines.

Unlike traditional shared-data family plans, each Tello line can have its own combination of data and calling. One person might need only a small amount of data while another could use 20 GB or Unlimited service.

This approach can help families avoid buying the same large data allowance for every line.

Each line maintains its own:

  • Phone number
  • Wireless plan
  • Data and minute balance
  • Device
  • Renewal date

Tello does not rely on a traditional multi-line discount. Instead, family members receive access to the same standard plan pricing and customization available to individual customers.

No Annual Contracts

Tello plans do not require an annual service agreement, and there is no early termination fee.

Customers can upgrade or downgrade their plan as usage changes. This flexibility can be useful if your cellular needs vary throughout the year or if you simply want to test a lower-cost provider without making a long-term commitment.

Tello uses a 30-day billing cycle rather than locking customers into a multi-year service arrangement.

Who Is Tello Best For?

Tello can make sense for several types of wireless customers:

  • Budget-conscious users who want to keep monthly wireless costs low
  • Light data users who spend most of their time connected to Wi-Fi
  • Moderate data users who do not need an expensive unlimited package
  • Heavy users who can work within Tello’s Unlimited high-speed data policy
  • Families with very different usage needs from one person to another
  • International callers who regularly contact supported destinations
  • Travelers who value Wi-Fi Calling and roaming options
  • BYOD customers who already own a compatible unlocked smartphone
  • eSIM users who want quick digital activation
  • Secondary-line users who need inexpensive service for another phone

Tello may be less suitable for customers who specifically want premium carrier perks, bundled entertainment subscriptions, heavily subsidized flagship phones, or a traditional brick-and-mortar retail experience.

If you are considering Tello, the best place to start depends on what matters most to you.

Why Consider Tello Mobile?

Tello’s main strength is flexibility. It gives customers a way to buy the amount of wireless service they actually need rather than automatically paying for a premium unlimited package.

For someone who uses only a few gigabytes of cellular data each month, that can mean a noticeably lower wireless bill. For heavier users, Tello still offers an Unlimited option while maintaining the same no-contract approach.

Add features such as 5G access, mobile hotspot, Wi-Fi Calling, eSIM, international calling, and roaming, and Tello provides many of the everyday capabilities people expect from a modern mobile provider without requiring a traditional carrier relationship.

The most important step before switching is to make sure the coverage works where you need it and that your existing phone is compatible. Once those two boxes are checked, you can compare the available plans and decide whether Tello’s pricing and flexibility fit your wireless needs.
