Tello Mobile Features & Benefits
Tello Mobile is best known for affordable, customizable wireless plans, but price is only part of the story. Tello includes a surprisingly broad set of features covering 5G access, mobile hotspot use, Wi-Fi Calling, international calling, eSIM activation, family account management, and more.
Many of these features are included without a separate monthly charge, making Tello a practical option for customers who want straightforward wireless service without paying for a large package of extras they may never use.
This guide takes a closer look at the features available with Tello and explains how they can affect your everyday mobile experience.
5G and 4G LTE Access
Tello customers can use both 5G and 4G LTE service when they have a compatible phone and network coverage is available. There is no separate 5G upgrade or premium 5G plan required.
If your device supports 5G, it can connect automatically when 5G service is available. When it is not, the phone can fall back to 4G LTE coverage.
This gives customers access to faster mobile speeds without having to move to a more expensive plan simply to use the 5G network.
Actual speeds and signal quality vary by location, device, network congestion, building conditions, and other factors. For a closer look at network performance and device requirements, visit our Tello Coverage & 5G Network page.
Mobile Hotspot & Tethering
Mobile hotspot is included with Tello data plans at no additional feature charge. This allows you to share your phone’s cellular data connection with another device, such as a laptop, tablet, or another smartphone.
For Tello’s limited-data plans, hotspot usage comes from the same data balance included with your plan. For example, if your plan includes 10 GB of data, data used through your hotspot counts against that 10 GB allowance.
The Unlimited plan works differently. It currently includes a dedicated 10 GB hotspot allowance.
A mobile hotspot can be useful when:
- You need internet access on a laptop while traveling
- Public Wi-Fi is unavailable or undesirable
- You want to connect a tablet without its own cellular plan
- Your regular internet service experiences a temporary outage
- You need occasional connectivity away from home or the office
Keep in mind that hotspot use can consume data quickly, particularly when streaming video, downloading large files, or installing software updates.
Wi-Fi Calling & Text
Wi-Fi Calling & Text is another useful feature included with Tello service. Instead of relying entirely on a cellular tower, compatible phones can make calls and send standard text messages through a Wi-Fi connection.
This can be particularly valuable when cellular reception is weak inside your home, office, hotel, or another building but reliable Wi-Fi is available.
Wi-Fi Calling can also be useful while traveling internationally because supported calls and texts can operate over Wi-Fi as though you were connected from the United States.
Calls made through Wi-Fi Calling use the minutes included in your Tello plan. Calls to destinations included in Tello’s international calling program can also use your plan minutes without a separate international calling charge.
Before using Wi-Fi Calling, customers must register a valid U.S. E911 address in their Tello account and enable the feature on a compatible phone.
Wi-Fi Calling depends on the quality and configuration of the Wi-Fi network. Some public, corporate, or hotel networks may restrict Wi-Fi Calling traffic.
International Calling to 60+ Countries
International calling is one of Tello’s more distinctive included features. Plans that include voice minutes also include calls to 60+ international destinations without a separate international calling package.
When you call an included destination, the call simply uses minutes from your regular monthly plan allowance. Customers with unlimited minutes can therefore make qualifying international calls without counting individual domestic-style minutes.
Not every country or type of phone number is included. Calls to destinations outside the included list may require Pay As You Go credit and are charged according to Tello’s applicable international rates.
Data-only plans do not include calling minutes, so customers using those plans would need to add voice service or use Pay As You Go credit for traditional calling.
We cover this in more detail on our dedicated Tello International Calling & Roaming page.
International Roaming
Tello also supports international roaming in more than 200 countries and territories. This allows eligible customers to use their Tello number for calls, texts, and mobile data while connected to supported networks outside the United States.
Standard international roaming generally works through a Pay As You Go balance. Customers need sufficient credit in their account and must enable international roaming through their Tello settings.
This is separate from international calling. International calling refers to calling another country, while roaming refers to using your Tello service while you are physically outside the United States.
Travelers who have dependable Wi-Fi may also be able to use Wi-Fi Calling instead of cellular roaming, depending on their phone and destination.
eSIM Activation
Tello supports eSIM on compatible devices, allowing customers to activate wireless service without installing a physical SIM card.
For eligible phones, eSIM can make activation faster because there is no SIM card to ship or insert. After ordering service, you can install the digital SIM profile and activate the line directly on your device.
eSIM can be especially useful for:
- Customers who want to start service quickly
- Phones with dual-SIM capabilities
- People who want to maintain two numbers on one compatible device
- Travelers who frequently switch between mobile services
Physical SIM cards remain available for compatible phones that do not support eSIM or for customers who simply prefer a traditional SIM.
Bring Your Own Phone
You do not necessarily need to purchase a new phone when switching to Tello. The provider supports Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) for compatible unlocked devices.
Before ordering service, Tello recommends checking the phone’s IMEI number through its compatibility tool. This confirms whether the device can operate properly on the network.
Your phone generally needs to be:
- Unlocked from its previous carrier
- Compatible with Tello’s network
- Capable of supporting VoLTE
- Compatible with the necessary LTE or 5G network bands
Bringing an existing phone can significantly reduce the initial cost of changing wireless providers, particularly if your current device is relatively new and still meets your needs.
Unlimited Text Messaging
Unlimited text messaging is included with every Tello monthly plan, including plans configured with limited minutes or even no voice minutes.
This makes it possible to build a data-focused plan while still keeping standard SMS text messaging available.
Tello also supports many common short-code and two-factor authentication (2FA) messages, allowing customers to receive verification codes used by banks, online services, and other accounts.
Support for some international short codes may vary, so particularly important authentication services should be tested after activation.
Visual Voicemail
Tello supports Visual Voicemail on compatible Android and iOS devices. Rather than dialing into a traditional voicemail system and listening to messages sequentially, Visual Voicemail can display available messages directly on your phone.
Support depends partly on the device and its built-in voicemail capabilities. Tello notes that most third-party visual voicemail apps are not supported, although certain compatible voicemail applications can be used on Android devices.
Traditional voicemail access remains available for customers who do not use Visual Voicemail.
3-Way Calling
Tello plans with calling service also support 3-way calling. This allows you to add another participant to an existing phone call and speak with both people at the same time.
It is a relatively simple feature, but it can be helpful for family discussions, coordinating appointments, small business conversations, or any situation where three people need to talk together without setting up a separate conferencing service.
Scam Guard
For customers concerned about unwanted or fraudulent calls, Tello offers an optional feature called Scam Guard.
Unlike many of Tello’s standard features, Scam Guard is currently a paid add-on for plans that include voice service. It offers two protection levels:
- Scam Alert – Potentially suspicious incoming calls can be labeled “Scam Likely”, allowing you to decide whether to answer.
- Scam Stop – Suspected scam calls can be blocked automatically before the phone rings.
Scam Guard currently costs $2 per billing cycle and can be managed through the My Settings section of a Tello account.
No automated screening system is perfect, so there is always a possibility that a legitimate call could be incorrectly identified. Customers expecting an important call from an unfamiliar number may prefer the less restrictive Scam Alert setting.
The My Tello App
Tello provides the My Tello app for iOS and Android devices. The app gives customers another way to manage and use aspects of their service.
Account management features allow customers to monitor usage and access their Tello service information. The app can also be used to make outgoing calls over Wi-Fi.
There is an important limitation: calling through the My Tello app is designed for outgoing calls. It does not replace the phone’s normal service for receiving calls or sending and receiving standard text messages.
Customers with built-in Wi-Fi Calling support on their phones will generally find the device’s native Wi-Fi Calling feature more complete.
Flexible Plan Changes
Another important Tello feature is the ability to change your plan without signing a long-term contract.
Customers can move between different data and calling combinations as their needs change. If you discover that 2 GB is not enough, for example, you can move to a larger data allowance rather than remaining locked into the same plan for a year or more.
You can also reduce your allowance if you realize you are consistently paying for data you never use.
Tello plan changes take effect immediately and start a new 30-day billing cycle, so it is worth considering your remaining balance and renewal date before making a change.
For current plan combinations and costs, see our Tello Mobile Plans & Pricing guide.
Family Account Management
Tello supports multiple lines under a single account through its Family Plans setup. Rather than forcing everyone in the household onto the same plan, each line can have its own data and voice configuration.
For example, one family member might need only a small amount of data while another uses 20 GB or Unlimited data. Each line keeps its own phone number, plan, device, balance, and renewal date.
Advantages include:
- One account for managing multiple lines
- A different plan for each family member
- No requirement to share a common data pool
- Ability to upgrade or downgrade individual lines
- No additional setup charge simply for adding a family line
Tello does not depend on the traditional multi-line discount model used by some larger carriers. Instead, each line receives access to the same low-cost plan structure available to individual customers.
No Annual Contract
Tello service is contract-free. Customers are not required to commit to a one-year or two-year service agreement, and there is no early termination fee for leaving the service.
This can be useful for people who want flexibility, including students, temporary residents, customers testing a lower-cost carrier, or anyone who simply prefers not to be tied to a long-term wireless agreement.
Plans operate on a 30-day cycle and can be adjusted as your requirements change.
Who Can Benefit Most From Tello’s Features?
Tello’s feature set can work for a wide range of users, but it may be particularly attractive for:
- Budget-conscious users who want to avoid paying for unused data
- Light smartphone users who spend most of their time on Wi-Fi
- Families where each person has different data requirements
- International callers who frequently contact supported destinations
- Travelers who value Wi-Fi Calling and international roaming options
- BYOD customers who want to continue using an existing unlocked phone
- eSIM users looking for fast digital activation
- Hotspot users who occasionally need to connect a laptop or tablet
The main appeal is flexibility. Instead of building its service around a single large unlimited package, Tello lets customers combine lower-cost plans with many of the same everyday features expected from modern wireless service.
Why Consider Tello Mobile?
Tello combines affordable plan choices with a solid collection of practical wireless features. Customers receive 5G access with compatible devices, hotspot capabilities, Wi-Fi Calling, unlimited texting, international calling options, and flexible account management without needing an annual contract.
Features such as eSIM, Bring Your Own Phone support, customizable family lines, and international roaming add flexibility for customers whose needs go beyond simple domestic calling and data.
Not every feature will matter to every user, which is part of Tello’s appeal. You can choose the amount of service you need and still have access to many features that larger carriers often associate with more expensive wireless plans.
