Tello International Calling & Roaming
Tello Mobile offers several ways to stay connected internationally, whether you are calling friends and family abroad from the United States or traveling outside the country yourself. The important thing is understanding that international calling and international roaming are two different services.
International calling means using your Tello line to call another country. Tello currently includes calls and texts to 60+ international destinations with plans that include voice minutes. International roaming, on the other hand, lets you use your Tello number while you are physically outside the United States and is available in 200+ countries and territories.
Tello also supports Wi-Fi Calling & Text, which can be especially useful when traveling abroad and connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
Tello International Calling
One of Tello’s standout features is that international calling is included with monthly plans that have voice minutes. You do not need to purchase a separate international calling package simply to reach many popular destinations.
Tello currently includes calls and texts to more than 60 international destinations. When the destination is included, the call uses minutes from your regular monthly balance just like a domestic call. Customers with unlimited minutes can make qualifying international calls without paying a separate per-minute international rate.
Popular destinations on Tello’s included international list currently include countries such as:
- Canada
- Mexico
- United Kingdom
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Spain
- India
- China
- Australia
- Brazil
- Argentina
The exact terms can vary by destination. Some countries may include calls to both mobile and landline numbers, while others may include only certain number types. For that reason, it is best to check Tello’s current international calling list before making frequent calls to a specific country.
What If the Country Is Not Included?
If the destination you want to call is not part of Tello’s included international list, you may still be able to place the call using Pay As You Go credit.
Tello publishes separate rates for international calls that are not included with monthly plans. The applicable cost depends on the country and, in some cases, whether you are calling a mobile or landline number.
Pay As You Go credit is separate from your monthly plan balance. When you call a destination with a listed per-minute rate, the charge is deducted from your available Pay As You Go credit.
This gives customers additional flexibility without requiring a separate long-term international package.
Data-Only Plans and International Calling
If you build a Tello plan with zero voice minutes, the included international calling benefit does not apply because there are no plan minutes available to use.
Customers with data-only plans who want to make traditional calls have two main options:
- Change to a Tello plan that includes voice minutes
- Add Pay As You Go credit for eligible calls
This distinction is worth keeping in mind when building a low-cost custom plan primarily around cellular data.
Tello International Roaming
Tello also supports international roaming in more than 200 countries and territories. Roaming allows you to continue using your Tello line for calls, text messages, and cellular data while connected to supported partner networks outside the United States.
In most destinations, international roaming uses your Pay As You Go balance. Charges vary by country and can apply separately to:
- Outgoing calls
- Incoming calls
- Outgoing text messages
- Incoming text messages where applicable
- Mobile data usage
Rates differ from one destination to another, so checking the current Tello roaming rates before traveling is important.
How to Activate Tello International Roaming
International roaming is not something you should assume will automatically work as soon as you arrive overseas. Tello requires customers to enable the feature through their account settings.
For standard international roaming outside promotional destinations, you generally need to:
- Have an active Tello line that has previously been used in the United States.
- Add sufficient Pay As You Go credit to your account.
- Log in to your Tello account and open My Settings.
- Turn International Roaming ON.
- If you want mobile data abroad, also enable Pay As You Go Data.
- Enable roaming in your phone’s own cellular settings.
Tello currently requires at least $5 of Pay As You Go credit to enable standard international roaming. The initial manual Pay As You Go purchase through Tello’s website currently has a higher minimum purchase amount, so review the current credit options before traveling.
Important: Tello states that international roaming will only work if the line has first been used in the United States. If you are planning an international trip shortly after activating service, make sure the line is active and working domestically before you leave.
How Tello Roaming Charges Work
Outside special promotions, roaming usage is deducted from your Pay As You Go balance. Calls are generally billed by the minute, messages by the message, and mobile data according to the rate applicable in the country you are visiting.
Tello notes that roaming usage can sometimes take several days to appear because usage records come from international partner networks. This means your displayed balance may not always reflect every recent roaming charge immediately.
Before traveling, it is a good idea to:
- Check the current roaming rates for your destination
- Add enough Pay As You Go credit for expected usage
- Monitor data consumption carefully
- Use Wi-Fi when available for data-intensive activities
- Turn roaming data off when you do not need it
Free Roaming in Europe Promotion
Tello currently has a limited-time Free Roaming in Europe promotion for eligible monthly-plan customers traveling in supported European destinations.
Under the current promotion, qualifying customers can use allowances from their regular Tello plan while roaming in participating European countries rather than relying entirely on Pay As You Go credit. If your plan includes mobile data, data usage can also come from that plan allowance.
This promotion is currently scheduled to end on January 31, 2027. Because this is a temporary offer rather than a permanent plan feature, customers traveling after that date should check Tello’s current roaming terms before relying on it.
Once regular plan allowances are exhausted, additional usage may be charged against available Pay As You Go credit. The offer also applies only to destinations included on Tello’s current Europe promotion list.
Using Wi-Fi Calling While Traveling Abroad
Wi-Fi Calling & Text provides another way to use your Tello number internationally without relying entirely on roaming.
With a compatible device and a suitable Wi-Fi connection, your phone can make and receive calls and send standard SMS messages over Wi-Fi. Tello treats this activity similarly to using your service while in the United States.
For example:
- Calls to the United States use your regular Tello voice minutes.
- Calls to destinations included in Tello’s 60+ country list use your plan minutes.
- Calls to non-included destinations can be charged against Pay As You Go credit.
- Standard SMS messaging can work through Wi-Fi Calling on compatible devices.
Wi-Fi Calling can therefore be particularly useful in hotels, homes, offices, airports, and other locations where you have reliable internet access.
Set Up Wi-Fi Calling Before You Travel
It is best to configure Wi-Fi Calling before leaving the United States. Tello requires a valid U.S. emergency address to be registered for E911 purposes.
To prepare:
- Log in to your Tello account.
- Open My Settings.
- Add or confirm your U.S. E911 emergency address.
- Enable Wi-Fi Calling on your phone.
- Test the feature before leaving the country.
Wi-Fi Calling depends on the network you are connected to. Some hotel, office, public, or managed Wi-Fi networks can block the traffic required for the feature to operate.
Can You Receive Verification Codes Abroad?
Wi-Fi Calling and Text can also help with one of the common problems travelers face: receiving two-factor authentication and one-time password messages while outside the United States.
Tello states that supported standard SMS messages and verification codes can be received through Wi-Fi Calling when properly configured. This can be especially useful when accessing banking, email, or other accounts that send login codes to your U.S. phone number.
There are limitations. International short codes and certain messaging systems may not always be supported, and Tello notes that MMS picture messages do not work through Wi-Fi Calling in the same way as standard SMS.
Using the My Tello App Abroad
If your phone does not support native Wi-Fi Calling, the My Tello app provides another option for making calls over an internet connection.
The app can use Wi-Fi to place outgoing calls using your Tello service. When calling one of the destinations included with your plan, the call uses your available voice minutes.
However, the My Tello app has an important limitation: it is primarily for outgoing calls. It does not provide the same complete calling and messaging functionality as native Wi-Fi Calling.
You cannot rely on the app to receive normal incoming calls or send and receive regular Tello text messages.
International Calling vs. International Roaming
Because the terms sound similar, it helps to keep the difference clear:
| Feature | What It Means | How Tello Handles It |
|---|---|---|
| International Calling | Calling another country from your Tello line | 60+ destinations included with plans that have minutes; other destinations may use PAYG credit |
| International Roaming | Using your Tello service while physically outside the U.S. | Available in 200+ countries and territories; normally charged through PAYG |
| Wi-Fi Calling | Using Wi-Fi instead of a cellular tower for calls and SMS | Uses your regular plan minutes and can work while traveling abroad |
| My Tello App | Making calls through an internet connection | Useful for outgoing calls, but does not replace full phone/SMS service |
Tips for Using Tello Internationally
A little preparation can help avoid unexpected charges or connectivity problems during a trip.
- Check your destination on Tello’s roaming coverage and rate pages before traveling.
- Set up Wi-Fi Calling and your E911 address before leaving the United States.
- Test Wi-Fi Calling at home before relying on it overseas.
- Add enough Pay As You Go credit if you plan to use cellular roaming.
- Enable International Roaming in both your Tello account and phone settings.
- Keep Pay As You Go Data disabled if you want to avoid cellular-data roaming charges.
- Use hotel, apartment, office, or other trusted Wi-Fi for large downloads and video streaming.
- Check the rate before calling a country that is not included in Tello’s international calling list.
- Remember that incoming roaming calls can also generate charges in standard PAYG roaming destinations.
Is Tello Good for International Users?
Tello can be particularly attractive for people who regularly communicate internationally. Including calls to more than 60 destinations with qualifying monthly plans is unusual for a low-cost wireless provider and can reduce the need for separate international calling packages.
For travelers, the combination of international roaming, Wi-Fi Calling, and the My Tello app provides several ways to maintain access to a U.S. number while abroad. The most economical approach will depend on where you are traveling and whether reliable Wi-Fi is available.
Customers who travel frequently should pay particular attention to roaming rates, as standard international roaming is generally usage-based rather than included in the monthly plan. Tello’s temporary European roaming promotion is an exception, but it is currently scheduled to expire on January 31, 2027.
