Tello Coverage & 5G Network
Tello Mobile offers nationwide wireless service using a combination of 5G and 4G LTE coverage. If you have a compatible 5G smartphone and 5G service is available where you are, your phone can connect to Tello’s fastest available network automatically. In locations where 5G is not available, compatible devices can continue using 4G LTE service.
Coverage is one of the most important things to consider before switching wireless providers. A low-cost plan is only useful if you can get a dependable signal where you spend your time. Before ordering Tello service, it is a good idea to check coverage not only at your home address, but also around your workplace, school, regular commute, and other locations you visit frequently.
Tello provides an online coverage checker that lets you enter an address, city, or ZIP code to see the expected service in your area.
Does Tello Have 5G Coverage?
Yes. Tello includes 5G network access with its mobile data plans at no additional charge. You do not need to purchase a special “5G plan” to use the faster network.
To connect to 5G, you generally need two things:
- A 5G-compatible phone that works with Tello’s network
- 5G coverage at your current location
If both requirements are met, your device should connect to 5G automatically. When 5G is unavailable or the signal is weaker, the phone may switch to 4G LTE instead.
This makes Tello suitable for customers who want access to modern 5G service without paying the higher monthly rates often associated with traditional carrier plans.
How Fast Is Tello 5G?
Mobile network speeds can vary considerably based on your location, phone, signal strength, network congestion, and the type of 5G coverage available in the area. Because of those variables, there is no single speed that every Tello customer should expect.
Tello’s current broadband disclosures list typical mobile performance in the following ranges:
| Network | Typical Download Speed | Typical Upload Speed | Typical Latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5G | 79–357 Mbps | 6–30 Mbps | 17–32 ms |
| 4G LTE | 13–61 Mbps | 2–11 Mbps | 26–46 ms |
These figures are useful as general expectations rather than guaranteed speeds. Your actual connection may be faster or slower depending on local network conditions.
For typical smartphone activities such as browsing, social media, navigation, music streaming, video calls, and HD video streaming, a solid 5G connection should provide more than enough performance. Even 4G LTE remains suitable for many everyday mobile activities when the network is not congested.
How to Check Tello Coverage
Before moving your phone number to Tello, use the provider’s coverage map to check the places where you will use your phone most often.
Tello’s coverage tool can provide information about expected signal strength in several different situations, including:
- Outdoor coverage while walking or spending time outside
- In-vehicle coverage while traveling
- Indoor residential coverage inside homes
- Indoor commercial coverage inside offices, stores, and other larger buildings
Checking only your home address may not tell the whole story. If you commute to work, travel regularly, or spend a lot of time at another location, check those addresses or ZIP codes as well.
Tip: If possible, check coverage for your home, workplace, school, frequently visited shopping areas, and common travel routes before switching.
Why Indoor Coverage Can Be Different
A coverage map can show that service is available in your neighborhood while your actual indoor signal may still vary. Wireless signals have to travel through walls, windows, roofing materials, and other obstacles before reaching your phone.
Buildings made from concrete, metal, energy-efficient glass, or other dense materials can weaken cellular signals. Basements and interior rooms may also have poorer reception than rooms near windows or exterior walls.
Other factors affecting mobile coverage include:
- Distance from the nearest network site
- Local terrain, hills, and vegetation
- Building materials
- Network congestion
- Your phone’s supported network bands
- Weather and temporary network conditions
- Whether you are indoors, outdoors, or traveling in a vehicle
This is why two people in the same ZIP code can sometimes have different experiences with the same wireless provider.
Tello 4G LTE Coverage
While 5G receives most of the attention, 4G LTE remains an important part of Tello’s network experience. Your phone can use LTE when 5G is unavailable, when the LTE signal is stronger, or when your device does not support 5G.
For many everyday activities, LTE remains perfectly capable. Email, web browsing, messaging, music streaming, navigation, social media, and many video services do not require extremely high speeds.
Customers with older compatible LTE phones therefore do not necessarily need to purchase a new 5G device simply to use Tello. However, a newer 5G-capable phone can provide access to faster speeds and additional network capacity where 5G coverage is available.
What Phones Work With Tello?
Tello allows customers to bring their own compatible phone, which can help reduce the cost of switching providers. However, the device must meet Tello’s network requirements.
Generally, your phone should be:
- Carrier unlocked
- Compatible with VoLTE
- Compatible with the LTE and/or 5G frequencies used by the network
Tello recommends checking your device through its Bring Your Own Phone compatibility tool using the phone’s IMEI number before ordering service.
You can normally find your IMEI by dialing *#06# on your phone or by looking in the device settings.
Important LTE Bands
For strong compatibility with Tello’s LTE service, the provider recommends support for several specific network bands.
At a minimum, a compatible phone should support:
- Band 2
- Band 4
- Band 12
Support for additional bands such as 5, 66, and 71 can help provide better coverage and network compatibility.
This is especially important when using older phones or devices originally manufactured for another country. A phone may technically support LTE while lacking some of the frequencies needed for the best Tello coverage in the United States.
Tello eSIM and Physical SIM Support
Tello supports both physical SIM cards and eSIM on compatible devices.
An eSIM can make switching faster because there is no physical card to wait for in the mail. After purchasing a plan, eligible customers can activate Tello digitally on a compatible unlocked smartphone.
Not every phone that supports eSIM will necessarily work with Tello, so checking the specific device before purchasing service is still important.
If your phone does not support Tello eSIM but is otherwise compatible with the network, you can use a traditional physical Tello SIM instead.
Wi-Fi Calling Can Help With Weak Indoor Coverage
Wi-Fi Calling & Text is included with Tello service on compatible devices. This feature can be particularly useful in homes, offices, or other buildings where cellular reception is weak but a reliable Wi-Fi connection is available.
When enabled, Wi-Fi Calling allows compatible phones to route calls and text messages over a Wi-Fi network instead of relying entirely on the nearby cellular signal.
That can make Tello more practical in locations where outdoor coverage is good but thick walls or other building materials reduce indoor reception.
Keep in mind that Wi-Fi Calling depends on the quality and reliability of the Wi-Fi internet connection you are using.
Does Tello Support Mobile Hotspot?
Yes. Tello allows customers to use compatible phones as a mobile hotspot, letting other devices such as laptops and tablets connect through the phone’s cellular data connection.
For limited-data plans, hotspot usage generally comes from your regular monthly data allowance. Tello’s Unlimited plan currently includes a separate 10 GB mobile hotspot allowance.
A hotspot can be useful while traveling or when you need temporary internet access on another device. However, Tello is designed primarily as a mobile phone service rather than as a replacement for a dedicated home broadband connection.
Tello also states that dedicated mobile broadband routers and devices such as certain MiFi and Netgear cellular routers are not supported.
5G Coverage vs. 5G Home Internet
It is important not to confuse Tello 5G mobile service with 5G Home Internet.
Tello’s 5G network is designed primarily for smartphones and other compatible personal mobile devices. Your phone can use the connection for calls, messaging, mobile data, and permitted hotspot use.
Dedicated 5G Home Internet services, by comparison, typically use a fixed wireless gateway designed to provide an entire household with broadband service. Tello does not currently position its mobile plans as a dedicated 5G home broadband replacement.
If you are primarily shopping for home internet rather than cellular phone service, visit our Internet Service Providers page to compare broadband options.
What Happens When You Travel?
Within the United States, your Tello service will depend on available network coverage at your destination. Before a trip, you can use Tello’s coverage map to check service in the cities and areas you plan to visit.
Tello also offers options for customers traveling internationally. These include Wi-Fi Calling & Text and paid international roaming in supported countries.
International roaming is a separate topic from domestic coverage and may involve Pay As You Go charges. If you regularly travel outside the United States, review Tello’s international service terms before your trip.
Coverage Tips Before Switching to Tello
If you are considering Tello as your next wireless provider, take a few minutes to evaluate both coverage and device compatibility before transferring your phone number.
A good pre-switch checklist includes:
- Check Tello coverage at your home address
- Check coverage where you work or attend school
- Review coverage along your regular commute
- Confirm that your phone is carrier unlocked
- Run your device through Tello’s IMEI compatibility checker
- Verify that an older or international phone supports the necessary LTE bands
- Confirm 5G compatibility if 5G access is important to you
- Check whether your phone supports Wi-Fi Calling and eSIM if you plan to use those features
Doing these checks before switching can reduce the chance of discovering a coverage or compatibility problem after your service has already been activated.
Is Tello 5G Coverage Right for You?
Tello can be a compelling choice for customers who want affordable access to 5G and 4G LTE service without committing to a traditional carrier contract. Its combination of nationwide coverage, 5G access, Wi-Fi Calling, hotspot support, eSIM availability, and bring-your-own-phone options makes it flexible for many types of wireless users.
Coverage should still be the deciding factor. Even a well-priced plan may not be the right choice if signal quality is weak in the places where you use your phone most often.
Start by checking Tello’s coverage at your most important locations and confirming your phone is compatible. Once you know the network works for your needs, visit our Tello Mobile Plans & Pricing page to compare data allowances and choose the plan that best matches your usage.
