AT&T Launches Internet Air
August 22, 2023 – AT&T launched "Internet Air," a fixed-wireless 5G home internet service, as a competitor to cable, fiber, and DSL in areas where AT&T Fiber isn't available. The service uses a 5G cellular gateway to provide Wi-Fi within a home, offers a simple pricing plan, and is available in multiple markets across the US.
The service can be set up in under 15 minutes with a simple QR-code guided process. Using the Smart Home Manager app, customers can find the best spot for the device, which features a modern design and optional extenders to eliminate dead zones. Priced at $60 per month plus taxes, the plan includes AT&T ActiveArmor security, has no equipment or overage fees, and requires no annual contract, though speeds may slow during network congestion and service can be restricted in cases of misuse. Initially targeted at areas with existing copper-based service where wireless capacity is strong, AT&T Internet Air is now available in 57 U.S. locations including San Diego, Baltimore, Austin, and Charlotte, with expansion tied to maintaining quality for both home and mobile customers.

The rankings reflect scores of 895 (large enterprise) and 853 (medium business) out of 1,000—leading all wireless carriers in those sectors. (J.D. Power)

DIRECTV to Own and Operate Former AT&T Video Operations
August 2, 2021 – AT&T and TPG finalized a transaction that spun off AT&T’s U.S. video operations (DIRECTV, AT&T TV, and U‑verse) into a new standalone company called DIRECTV. The newly formed DIRECTV took over ownership and operation of the video services formerly run by AT&T, which at the end of Q2 2021 had approximately 15.4 million premium video subscribers.
Under the deal, AT&T contributed its video business in exchange for preferred units and a 70% stake in the common units of DIRECTV, while TPG provided about $1.8 billion in cash for preferred units and a 30% common equity interest. AT&T also received $7.1 billion in cash (netting $7.6 billion after factoring in ~$470 million in cash on hand) and transferred ~$195 million in video business debt.
The transaction excluded certain assets and operations: WarnerMedia’s HBO Max streaming platform and regional sports networks, AT&T’s Latin American video unit (Vrio), U‑verse network infrastructure, and its Sky Mexico stake. DIRECTV is expected to continue offering HBO Max to its subscribers and maintain any bundle integrations with wireless or broadband.
AT&T framed the move as part of a strategy to reduce debt — with a goal of bringing its net debt‑to‑adjusted EBITDA ratio below 2.5× by the end of 2023.
AT&T Fiber Increases Internet Speed and Security Features for Customers
April 26, 2021 – AT&T announced that it would boost speeds on its fiber broadband service for entry and mid‑tier plans—raising basic plans from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps and mid‑tier from 300 Mbps to 500 Mbps—while keeping the pricing unchanged. Alongside these speed upgrades, AT&T introduced AT&T Internet Security (an enhancement to its ActiveArmor suite), which helps detect vulnerabilities in home networks; the feature is available to Fiber customers at no extra cost, accessible through AT&T’s Smart Home Manager app.
AT&T Has the Fastest Nationwide 5G Network
October 13, 2020 – AT&T Wireless claimed the title of the fastest nationwide 5G network for Q3 2020 based on Ookla Speedtest data, marking the seventh successive quarter in which it also ranked as the overall fastest wireless network in the U.S. and the fastest for iPhones. The announcement emphasized that the results are drawn from millions of real-world consumer tests, comparing median 5G download speeds across networks that provide “nationwide” 5G coverage. AT&T also framed the achievement as a reflection of ongoing investments and enhancements in its 5G infrastructure to deliver better speed and experience across its coverage footprint.
AT&T Introduces New Fiber Pricing Options, Unlimited Data for Customers
October 1, 2020 – AT&T introduced new pricing tiers for AT&T Fiber—Internet 100, 300, and 1000—available to new customers without requiring a bundle or annual contract. Along with the price restructuring, AT&T made a key change: all existing and new Fiber customers on those three plans would receive “unlimited data” at no extra cost (i.e. no overage charges). To help customers during the COVID‑19 period, AT&T also extended a data overage waiver for its consumer Fiber and Internet customers through the end of the year.
AT&T No Longer Offers DSL Service

AT&T TV Launches Nationwide
March 1, 2020 – AT&T launched AT&T TV nationwide (after a successful 13‑market pilot), positioning it as a streaming-enabled live TV service that blends traditional broadcast channels and Internet apps into a unified experience. Powered by Android TV and bundled with features like a Google Assistant voice remote, a cloud DVR with 500 hours of storage, and seamless switching between live TV and streaming apps, the service functions with a compatible broadband connection. AT&T offered a combined bundle of AT&T TV and 1 Gbps Internet at $39.99 per month each for 12 months (with a 24‑month TV contract) in areas where available, and made the TV service available standalone in other markets. AT&T Launches Industry-First 400-Gigabit Network Connection
November 20, 2019 – AT&T announced the activation of a live 400 Gbps optical connection between Dallas and Atlanta—marking an industry first for a real, production-level deployment at that capacity. The connection, designed to support rising bandwidth demands from video streaming, 5G, gaming, and AR/VR, runs over a software-defined Ultra Long Haul (ULH) optical system supplied by Ciena. On the routing side, a white-box router from UfiSpace, built on Broadcom’s Jericho2 chip and following a Disaggregated Chassis (DDC) model, handles the 400G traffic. InnoLight transceivers (QSFP56-DD FR4) enable the signal to travel over up to 2 kilometers of single-mode fiber. The infrastructure also includes flexible-grid ROADMs, allowing software-driven bandwidth allocation. This deployment was part of AT&T’s broader plan to support nationwide 5G and expand 400G capabilities across its backbone in 2020, with many previously installed systems already engineered to be upgradeable via software.

New York City, August 6, 2019 – AT&T is lighting up 5G in parts of New York City today. The newly available service starts in limited areas initially, delivering additional capacity and lower latency over 5G millimeter wave (what we call 5G+) beginning with business customers and developers.
“As a densely-populated, global business and entertainment hub, New York City stands to benefit greatly from having access to 5G, and we’ve been eager to introduce the service here,” said Amy Kramer, president, AT&T New York. “While our initial availability in NYC is a limited introduction at launch, we’re committed to working closely with the City to extend coverage to more neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs.”
Kramer added, “While we are pleased to take the first step today in NYC, we maintain that the City is in critical need of a strategy that allows wireless carriers to add capacity where it's most needed - particularly in densely populated and trafficked areas - in order for 5G to reach its full potential for our customers.”

As per Vince Torres, Senior Vice President ofAT&T Mobility & Entertainment, Global Wireless Solutions, a leading independent 3rd party, today named AT&T the nation’s best network for streaming video. The same nationwide first-of-its-kind test also found that AT&T has the most reliable video stream and the highest video quality. Video traffic now makes up over half of AT&T's mobile traffic. Mobile data traffic on the national wireless network increased more than 250,000% from 2007 to 2017.
(GWS) has released the results of its nationwide mobile video streaming test. AT&T performed best overall taking three of four category wins ahead of second place Verizon. T-Mobile came in third, despite clocking one category win, and Sprint came in last.
GWS undertook real-world testing that focused on the four factors that can cause the most frustration for consumers when watching their favorite show on their smartphone or tablet. These are loading (time to first picture), video quality, amount of video freezing, and reliability of the video stream.
98% of videos streamed over AT&T’s network were successfully completed; also videos tested on AT&T only froze 0.82% of the time while having a higher quality playback than other networks. T-Mobile stepped up to the video starting line the quickest, sneaking first place with an average loading time of 3.2 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than AT&T. By comparison, 8.5% of the videos streamed on Sprint failed, 2% of the time they froze, and loading time averaged 3.9 seconds. Meanwhile, Verizon had a respectable showing by completing just under 98% of the videos streamed on its network along with middle of the pack finishes with the other factors.
| OneScore Ranking for Overall Best Video Performance | Reliability of Video Stream | Quickest Time to Load | Lowest % of Picture Freezing | Highest Video Quality | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Sprint | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| T-Mobile | 3 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| Verizon | 2 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
The average US adult watches 72 minutes of digital video per day, with 43% of that time on a smartphone. 15% of Americans also watch TV solely through streaming services like DIRECTV NOW, Netflix, and YouTube.

AT&T Plans for Fiber-Optic GigaPower in 100 U.S. Cities and Municipalities
Dallas, Texas, April 21, 2014 – AT&T today announced a major initiative to expand its ultra-fast fiber network to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities nationwide, including 21 new major metropolitan areas. The fiber network will deliver AT&T U-verse with GigaPower service, which can deliver broadband speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second and AT&T’s most advanced TV services, to consumers and businesses.
The list of 21 candidate metropolitan areas includes: Atlanta, Augusta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Fort Worth, Fort Lauderdale, Greensboro, Houston, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Oakland, Orlando, San Antonio, San Diego, St. Louis, San Francisco, and San Jose. With previously announced markets, AT&T now has committed to or is exploring 25 metro areas for fiber deployment.
“We’re delivering advanced services that offer consumers and small businesses the ability to do more, faster, help communities create a new wave of innovation, and encourage economic development,” said Lori Lee, senior executive vice president, AT&T Home Solutions. “We’re interested in working with communities that appreciate the value of the most advanced technologies and are willing to encourage investment by offering solid investment cases and policies.”
AT&T U-verse uses advanced IP technology and a network that includes fiber-optic technology to go beyond what cable can offer. It transforms the user experience for consumers and business users and is an essential part of AT&T’s commitment to fiber infrastructure.
The planned expanded availability of U-verse with GigaPower is part of AT&T’s Project Velocity IP (VIP) investment plan to expand and enhance its wireless and wireline IP broadband networks to support growing customer demand for high-speed Internet access, advanced TV services, and new mobile and cloud services. This expanded fiber build is not expected to impact AT&T’s capital investment plans for 2014. And AT&T continues to expect that its wired IP broadband network will reach 57 million customer locations in its 22-state wireline footprint by the end of 2015.
AT&T U-verse with GigaPower Internet services are expected to include:
- Internet speeds reaching up to 1 Gigabit per second, faster than the fastest consumer Internet available in most communities today. With Gigabit speeds, you can download an HD online movie in less than 36 seconds, download 25 songs in one second, and download your favorite TV show in less than 3 seconds.***
- Access to cutting-edge TV services that include the most advanced AT&T Total Home DVR with more HD TV streams to record and watch multiple shows simultaneously, plus greater DVR storage capacity.
- Super-fast Wi-Fi speeds and the ability to schedule DVR recordings and watch hit TV shows on more than 30 varieties of smartphones and tablets, as well as your PC.
- Faster speeds that enable small businesses to more quickly and seamlessly:
- Upload, download and share large data files and images
- Back up data remotely in the cloud at one or multiple locations
- Videoconference with suppliers, business partners, and customers
AT&T U-verse with GigaPower services are available in Austin and some surrounding communities, and are expected to roll out in parts of Dallas this summer. AT&T first made the services available to tens of thousands of households in Austin and surrounding communities in December 2013 and recently announced it will expand the fiber network to double the households in the Austin area this year as a result of high demand that has exceeded expectations.
AT&T announced earlier this month that it is in discussions with North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) to bring U-verse with GigaPower to parts of Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Winston-Salem and Raleigh. The proposed plan for the North Carolina communities, which requires ratification from the six city councils, outlines fiber deployments in areas where there is demand for ultra-fast broadband and sound policies for investment.
